2022/2023 Book Handover

PTA Petroleum is extremely passionate about education – educating our future generations and giving back to the local communities is extremely important to us. We like to partner with our customers, where we request that they nominate a school that they feel would benefit from a donation of a mini library on wheels – a mobile library that can be moved from classroom to classroom with a collection of stunning educational books. Once the schools have been notified that they have been nominated, we pass on the school contact details onto the supplier of the books who then contacts the schools and finds out information about the age groups, grades offered and what books would suit their needs as a school.
Ball skills and gross motor skills tend to be overlooked at a number of schools, so we also donate a number of balls to each school, in the hopes that they will aid the children.

We approached Sabelo Nyaba, General Manager for Kwacele Farming (Pty) Limited and asked him to nominate two schools in his area to be the worthy recipients of a Mini Library on Wheels donation.

The first school we visited on 24th January 2022 was Sakhumuzi Primary School – Stanger, which is a public primary school in the area. We were welcomed by Miss R.N. Nzuza (Headmistress), staff and pupils of this school. When they saw the books, they were sograteful to be nominated for this amazing contribution towards their school.

The second school we visited was Nsonono Primary School – Stanger, this is a small public school and comprises of just over 100 children. The principle, staff and children were so grateful for the mini library and other donations. The children gathered around the books, picked them up, started to page through and were very excited to start reading, the balls were another big attraction for the children.

The third school we visited was nominated by James Construction from Estcourt to be the beneficiaries of the stunning library trolley, books, balls and other donations for their school On the 26th January 2022, we were taken to a wonderful school in Estcourt; Phasiwe Primary School which is located in the Emqedanda Area, Estcourt. Empowering Young Minds: Book Donations to Foster Reading Culture
A movement advocating for quality in early childhood development has revealed that 81% of Grade 4 pupils are unable to read for meaning in any language. After assessing the reading skills of more than 12,426 Grade 4 students, we recognised the critical need to support these children and give back to our local communities by providing brand-new books for their schools.

On 4 May 2023, we conducted two book handovers.

The Grange
Our first visit was to “The Grange,” a beautiful school located at 140 White Road, The Grange, PMB. While the school has a library, the existing books are old, worn out, and unsuitable for the children to read. We were warmly welcomed by the principal, Mr M. Ndlovu, along with the staff and pupils. The excitement was palpable as the children saw the new books and mini-library trolley. We hope this donation will help foster a love for reading. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone at The Grange Primary School for their warm welcome and hospitality, especially to Mrs T. Ramjit.

Thornville Primary School
Our second visit was to Thornville Primary School, nominated by Mike from Thornville Service Station. We received a similarly warm welcome from the principal, Mr Ranesh Chowthee, his staff, and the pupils. As the school does not have a library, the children were particularly thrilled to receive the books. Mr Chowthee explained that the school lacks the funds to purchase fiction or non-fiction books, making these donations a valuable asset for the children. They expressed their deep gratitude, and we look forward to returning soon to see the impact these books have had on the children’s reading journey.

The power of education extends beyond the development of skills we need for economic success. It can contribute to nation-building and reconciliation. The children of today are the leaders of tomorrow, and books and reading are the foundation on which they build their futures. - Nelson Mandela
